Library
Welcome to our reading community
Our school library is cosy and well- stocked with books to suit everyone’s reader identity.
Laylah and Josh are our school librarians who are responsible for opening the library up to pupils twice a week to loan out books. They are both avid readers; Josh loves myths and legends and is currently reading Beowulf, Grendel and The Dragon while Laylah likes to read horror and history books- Goosebumps being some of her favourite texts.
Each class has a timetabled slot to visit the library where they can read for pleasure or research purposes. We often pair up the oldest children with the youngest to share big books, traditional tales, fairy tales and nursery rhymes. The children love to record key phrases/parts of the stories- such as “FEE FI FO FUM, I SMELL THE BLOOD OF AN ENGLISHMAN “ onto sound buttons where the nursery children can listen to them back.
Children who read a minimum of 3 times a week are entered into our weekly book draw. If they are one of the lucky winners, they come to the library and choose from our wide selection of specially chosen books that they can take home to keep.
While we have a wide variety of books, we are always eager to grow our selection even further. We have signed up to The World of Stories initiative created by Puffin and National Literacy Trust. With funding from Arts Council, England, they are going to help us champion reading for pleasure and creativity in school and connect us with local library services. Specialist training will be delivered to staff and we will receive delivery of 400 new and diverse books from independent publishers in Spring 2023. We are very excited! In the meantime, if anyone has any high- quality books that are no longer being read at home, please consider donating them to school.
