Years 3 & 4
Welcome to the class page of Years 3 & 4. We are taught by Mr Fairbridge, Miss Gazzard and Mrs Robson with excellent support from Miss Sheridan
Every day is a busy day in our classroom. The day starts with listening to music from a chosen genre or artist while we complete a morning job – a range of challenges linked normally to arithmetic or grammar. However, our days can start even earlier and we are thankful for the opportunity to eat breakfast with our friends in the free breakfast club that school provides from 8:00. Following these morning activities, we are straight into Maths where we always begin with mental maths before moving into the main lesson. The main lesson focuses mainly on fluency – giving us the foundation to use maths in a variety of ways. When we are confident with methods, we have stand alone problem solving lessons allowing us to apply our learning in a variety of ways. Every Friday we have an additional Multiplication Tables Lesson and this focuses on giving children a deeper understanding of their tables through repeated addition, and the relationship between the numbers
Reading is the cornerstone of all of our learning and we know that, without being able to read, we will find everything else much more challenging. That is why Mr Fairbridge (and all the other teachers) asks us to read every night before going to bed. If we get three signatures in our reading records, we are entered into a book draw where, if successfully drawn out, we receive a free book of our choice! We also have guided reading 4x p/w where we read a wide range of texts and learn how to comprehend what we are reading thus in turn making us more fluent readers.
After break, we have a spelling session – learning the new spelling pattern for the week and strategies to help us be more successful. This is followed by our English session where we further enhance our writing skills. We learn how to write for different purposes and how to use a range of structures to be successful. We improve our vocabulary through discussion and improve our grammar through targeted lessons that aid our writing. We then reinforce these skills at the start of each lesson.
Our afternoon sessions begin with our class novel. We then spend the rest of the afternoon further developing our knowledge and understanding through a range of subjects and lessons.
Mr Fairbridge is passionate about keeping us safe and being prepared to live in a digital world. Through our computing lessons, we will learn key skills to prepare us for work when we grow up and show us how to keep safe online through targeted lessons on online profiles and what to look out for.
On top of all of these fantastic learning opportunities Miss Sheridan (our teaching assistant) loves listening to us read one to one and supports us when we find things challenging through focused intervention sessions giving us additional time to understand key concepts. She is passionate about art and has a KS2 art club after school.
We all understand our own roles and expectations inside and outside the classroom and consistently follow our three school rules – Be Safe, Be Ready, Be Respectful. We love to be rewarded with Class Dojos, phone calls home and a Dale postcard when we have gone above and beyond this.
